New Features & Improvements

Area / Application

New Features & Improvements

Base Software

  • We improved the viewing of documents by introducing a dedicated Documents Viewer mode. You can enter this mode by double-clicking on any document in the Documents Area located on the right-hand side in Free Mode.
  • The user interface allows now a more flexible arrangement of controls and viewers which is beneficial when using dual screen setups.
  • The view options (UI zoom, Dark mode) and Help have been moved to new menu entries.
  • You can now arrange tools within a workbench in up to three columns using drag&drop of the respective tools.
  • You can undock the Workbench Viewer and the Documents Viewer from the main window. This allows moving the viewer to another screen extending the screen space.
  • The Assign Pixel Size workbench now allows a read-out of an existing scaling and a re-calculation of a scaling into different units.
  • The Module Manager was renamed to Toolkit Manager. This reflects the licensing transition to toolkits introduced with ZEN core 3.8.
  • For Floating License setups, you can now select the required toolkits at the start of ZEN core.

2D Toolkit

Changes in available measurement features:

  • Added Inscribed Circle ignoring holes in the objects.
  • Calculation of Feret features is now using a new algorithm, which gives identical measurement results to arivis Pro. Related measurement features which use the Feret features as a basis were replaced accordingly. The newly introduced features are indicated by the ending (“arivis”).

Backward compatibility: Existing image analysis settings created with older ZEN core versions will still work without adaptions.

AI Toolkit

Import from ZEN core archive:

  • Direct import of images from the ZEN core archive into the AI model training interface is now supported. This functionality is available for training Intellesis Segmentation, Intellesis Object Classification, and Intellesis Denoising models.

Improved multi-channel support:

  • Enhanced support for training single-channel Intellesis Segmentation models with multi-channel images. You can now also add multi-channel images to a model trained on a single channel and select the desired channel to be used for each individual image.

Docker Desktop

  • Included Docker Desktop in the ZEISS Microscopy Installer.

Materials Applications

Grain Size analysis

The Grain Size analysis according to the ISO 643 has been updated to reflect the changes in the standard revision from 2024. This includes updates to the grain size calculations as well as a new set of comparison charts as included in the standard. The analysis according to ASTM E112 and ASTM E1382 has also been updated with minor revisions but no changes in the calculations.

Multiphase porosity

Changes in available measurement features:

  • Added Inscribed Circle ignoring holes in the objects
  • Calculation of Feret features is now using a new algorithm, which gives identical measurement results to arivis Pro. Related measurement features which use the Feret features as a basis were replaced accordingly. The newly introduced features are indicated by the ending (“arivis”).
  • Backward compatibility: Existing jobs created with older ZEN core versions will still work without adaptions.

Layer thickness

Changes in available measurement features:

  • The layer thickness job will from now on use the newly introduced Feret features as default.

Backward compatibility: Existing jobs created with older ZEN core versions will still work without adaptions.

The analysis according to ISO 1463 and ASTM B 4872 has been updated with minor revisions but no changes in the calculations.

Technical Cleanliness Analysis (TCA)

Note: In April 2023, the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation (IPA) awarded ZEISS with its machine learning based object classification in TCA first place in the REINER! Fraunhofer Technology Award. ZEISS One Scan Technology for TCA and particle analysis has been granted a US patent (US 11,692,928 B2) in July 2023.

General improvements

  • As part of the coming revision of VDA 19.1 the Total fiber length is added to the length classification table and TCA report.
  • The occupancy rate allows in addition the definition of a tolerance value. The extended approval result is shown in the Size Distribution view.
  • The TCA reporting offers now the option for one individual report per standard if more than one standard was selected for technical cleanliness analysis.

Standard Updates for Oil analysis

  • Update of ISO 4406 (2017) to the latest version ISO 4406 (2021). No changes in calculation and classification. The on-line notation of the contamination classes is now visible in the report.
  • The aerospace standard SAE AS4059 Revision F was replaced by SAE AS4059 Revision G (table 1.1 and table 2.1). The contamination code as one-liner and the contamination class (maximum code value) are added. By selection of ECD as classification parameter the APC size classes are supported.
  • New China National Standards added:
    - GB/T 14039:2002 (equivalent to ISO 4406)
    - GB/T 20082:2006 (equivalent to ISO 4407)

Non-Metallic Inclusion Analysis (NMI)

New features for NMI

  • Update of JIS G0555:2020 to the latest version JIS G0555:2023. The standard is based on ISO 4967:2013. Inclusion formation and assessment are not changed.
Please note: The Point Count Method is not part of ZEN core NMI but can be addressed as customer specific solution.

Extension of inclusion parameter table and NMI result views

  • Since last release v3.11 the NMI standard template offers the option to select individual inclusion width parameter for type A, C and D. The functionality is available for ASTM E45, ISO 4967, JIS G0555 and GB/T 10561. This mode allows enhanced comparability between ASTM E45 and ISO 4967 (and related standards).
  • With release v.3.12 the standard specific inclusion table was further extended and contains now the information on the applied classification width parameter for all inclusion types. The table provides deep insights and a transparent overview of the results of the classification by inclusion size and type.
  • The applied inclusion width parameter is now clearly displayed in the NMI Result Views (global results and field based) and the applied parameter table.

ZEISS Zaphire Connector

The Zaphire Connector has been discontinued with ZEN core 3.8 due to technical incompatibilities. Any customers wanting to directly transfer images from ZEN core to Zaphire have to use ZEN core 3.6 or earlier.

arivis Cloud (on-site)

The execution of arivis Cloud workflows via the arivis Cloud Modules (on-site) workbench has been discontinued. This does not influence the arivis Cloud AI integration.

Smartproof 5
Visioner 1
O-INSPECT duo

ZEN core 3.12 is not compatible with Smartproof 5! The ZEN core version for Smartproof 5 has been discontinued and the last compatible version is ZEN core 3.8.

ZEN core 3.12 version must be ordered also for Visioner 1. The previously existing special configurations are not available anymore. For upgrades to ZEN core 3.12, the general ZEN core 3.12 upgrade numbers do apply also for Visioner 1.

ZEN core 3.12 is not compatible with the O-INSPECT duo! ZEN core 3.11 is the currently released version for the O-INSPECT duo. Please do not upgrade to ZEN core 3.12.

ZEN starter

For ZEN starter 3.12 only a limited number of options are available. Do not upgrade a ZEN starter version 3.4 or earlier with licensed modules as this might result in a loss of functionality. In general, the included functionality for ZEN starter has increased reducing the need for some of the previously needed modules.
